The NY Times endorses Democrat for Republican Primary.

by Sheldon on January 25, 2008

We have strong disagreements with all the Republicans running for president. The leading candidates have no plan for getting American troops out of Iraq. They are too wedded to discredited economic theories and unwilling even now to break with the legacy of President Bush. We disagree with them strongly on what makes a good Supreme Court justice.

Maybe that’s because you are Democrats?

Still, there is a choice to be made, and it is an easy one. Senator John McCain of Arizona is the only Republican who promises to end the George Bush style of governing from and on behalf of a small, angry fringe. With a record of working across the aisle to develop sound bipartisan legislation, he would offer a choice to a broader range of Americans than the rest of the Republican field.

You mean, he’s the only Republican that keeps falling over to the left.

I’m not a big fan of the Republican options this year, now that Fred! has withdrawn but honestly, why does the NYT even bother?

In 2006, however, Mr. McCain stood up for the humane treatment of prisoners and for a ban on torture. We said then that he was being conned by Mr. Bush, who had no intention of following the rules. But Mr. McCain took a stand, just as he did in recognizing the threat of global warming early. He has been a staunch advocate of campaign finance reform, working with Senator Russ Feingold, among the most liberal of Democrats, on groundbreaking legislation, just as he worked with Senator Edward Kennedy on immigration reform.

Did he actually stand for smaller government, less taxes, etc? What actually makes him a Republican?

Even their advertising on this opinion was paid for by the DNC.

So I suppose you prefer when media outlets lie and make pathetic attempts to hide their ideological bias a la Fox News. At least the Times is fairly open about it.

Actually, I’d rather that Fox, CNN and the Times all come out and say it. I just found this particular “endorsement” funny in that everything about it said we like McCain because he’s almost a Democrat. The advertising (even though generated by scripts,) just said it all.

Being biased is human nature. Being open about it is just being honest.

it might be wise to vote against anyone the n.y.times might endorse.

As a Democrat I would hope anyone but McCain wins the Republican nomination. The rest of the Republican field should be unelectable. Mike Huckabee believes in creation science and not evolution. No one would have to bomb us back to the stone age because he’s already there. Guiliani is a fascist who would surpress freedoms more than Bush. Mit Romney makes John Kerry look consistant. (he supported abortion rights while governor of Mass.). The New York Times is simply endorsing the most intelligent well qualified candidate. The rest of the Republican party is too myopically right wing to notice. That’s why the Republicans must be defeated in November.

As a conservative I’d say that I’d prefer that a conservative got in. Of course, there aren’t any running.
